WC Qatar is around the corner!

WC Qatar is around the corner!

As many sports enthusiasts among us know, the World Cup will be back soon. After a long wait due to the corona pandemic, most can hardly wait for it to start. All this with the necessary drama.

Circumstances

First we will talk about the drastic working conditions in which the workers had to build the stadiums necessary for the World Cup in Qatar. Many people died during the construction of these huge stadiums. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), there were 50 dead by the end of 2021, 500 seriously wounded and 37 thousand slightly injured. These figures are strongly denied by the Emir of Qatar.

Injuries

Besides all the fuss about the number of dead, injured and working conditions. Is there also much drama about the date of the World Cup. This has been moved by FIFA to November/December instead of the normal July/August. Many of us think the reason behind this is the summer temperatures in Qatar. However, this does not appear to be correct according to FIFA.

They say that the reason for moving this is in order to preserve the culture of football. The World Cup is always every 4 years, FIFA does not want to change this by suddenly waiting a year longer and has therefore chosen to let the World Cup continue in November/December.

Because the World Cup is played in November/December, it falls in the middle of the regular football season. If the World Cup is played during the summer, the season is usually as good as finished, allowing many top athletes to rest for a few weeks so that they can nog get unnecessary injuries and thus miss the World Cup. At the moment that is not the case, for example, some top athletes are in danger of not being able to participate due to injuries.

To name just a few, Heung Min Son (Left Winger for Tottenham Hotspur and South-Korea), Kyle Walker (Right Back for Manchester City and England), Paul Pogba (Midfielder for Juventus and France) and also our own Romelu Lukaku may miss the World Cup.
